Final Piece

My final piece to the art area was a painting and textile-based sculpture. It was inspired by a collage I created for the painting specialism day, and by the painting I created for that. The collage uses images from a RSPC magazine and pieces of colourful fabric and felt. I though these fit the prompt 'Noise' because birds make noise by singing and they all make different noises, and yet can seem very quiet when you birdwatch. For the final piece I immediately knew I wanted to create a large scale textile piece to accompany a painting of the kingfisher, as this ties in design with art, and connects to sculpture. I painted the bird with oil paint and mounted her on a thick real stick from the woods, disconnecting her feet from her body and gluing them to the front of the stick to add more depth. I decided to create a flower from fabric using yellow and pink because of what fabric I had available. The idea of making a flower out of fabric was partly inspired by a floral dress by Oscar de la Renta which is covered in fabric flowers. With more fabric and more time I would have been able to make a flower that was more detailed and colourful. The pollen is a simple blue button, and the petals are sewn onto shaped pieces of paper. The bird turned out really well and the flower I think was successful too but they are very different styles. I was worried they would clash but I think they complement each other well, especially with the stick. Upon reflection I would definitely like to expand the piece, maybe making a whole tree using real sticks and painted birds. I tried a slightly Monet approach with the chest of the bird, the same as my previous painting, because it had been successful. Overall, I'm very happy with my final piece, although I would have liked to clean up the flower and maybe work on a lager scale.
