Wire Bag

Upon reflection, some of my small wire sculptures were a bit too literal in relation to my original drawing, with one looking like a berry and another looking like a tree. The one that was the most abstract came from one of the zoomed-in areas of one of the paintings. I decided to focus on this one for my expansion because the way I had folded and attached bits of masking tape reminded me of handles. I thought to recreate it on a larger scale and turn it into a bag. I ignored some of the paper pieces and copied the general shape of the wire, twisting wire around itself so it would be thicker. The look of this reminded me of barbed wire, which gave me the idea to make it a barbed wire bag. I added small bits of wire to make it spikey and had planned to add a net-type thing to the centre to make it a proper bag, but the tutor spoke to me about how in fashion, it doesn't always have to make sense or have a purpose, and I had little time, so I left it without. For the handle, I made a chain out of the wire and tried to hot glue the parts together but this didn't look right and I had to remove it. Another tutor was quite critical of the difference between the barbed wire and the chain, and said that the way I tied the pieces together 'interrupted the flow', but I didn't see any other way I could do it with the limited resources and time that I had. The other tutor liked it, so there was a mix of responses. The main theme behind the bag is the fact that it has no true purpose - a bag has two purposes: to hold things and to be comfortable. This des neither, as there is nowhere to place stuff and the barbed wire could stab you, so it is absolutely useless but that's on purpose. I was inspired by Susan Freda's mini wire dresses and their amazing details. I would love to expand my idea in relation to her work by creating an entire wire outfit and photograph it, possibly even create a collection of wire clothes and accessories.
